Access SmartDraw from official site www.SmartDraw.com. The “Create A New Document” window appears. Scroll down the menu on the left to “Landscape Design.” Select “Landscape SmartTemplates.”

Consider the drawing type needed for the design. Examples commercial and even residential. Within each of these main headings subheadings such as office building designs and golf courses exist. Click on one of these templates or select “Blank Landscape” to start from scratch.

Draw the plan using the template document that opens on the “Untitled Landscape” window. Click on the bold letter “A” icon to insert a title. Open the “Landscape Area” design library to the left of the screen. Scroll down the list of areas to choose those best suited to the drawing type.

Select an area by clicking on it. Drag it to the blank document and drop it in place. Access the “Drawing Area” toolbar and choose the drop down list next to the “Line Tool” command. Pick either “polygon line” for default segments or “freehand line” to draw original shapes.

Return to the “Landscape Design” toolbar. Choose the “Fill Area” button to change the fill color of the shapes. From the same toolbar, click the “Texture” icon. Give each shape on the document the necessary texture. Examples are grass, stone and wood.

Add visual effects to the design. Insert plants and other objects, such as rocks and bird baths. Simply click on the relevant icons on the “Landscape Design” toolbar. Any object can be moved by clicking on it and dragging it to a new location.

Complete the design with sizing and scale specifications. Click on “Show Lengths” in the “Landscape Design” menu and type in the name and desired length of the object. If needed, change the scale with the “Rulers” tab. Select either “standard scale” or “custom” to draw objects to the correct scale.
